Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about working with Joseph Roszhart and the career positioning process.
What is career positioning and how is it different from career coaching?
Career coaching typically focuses on mindset, clarity, and motivation — helping you figure out what you want and how to pursue it. Career positioning is more specific and more strategic. It focuses on how your resume, LinkedIn profile, and interview narrative communicate your value to the people making hiring decisions — and whether the language in your materials matches the hiring audience you are trying to reach.
I work with professionals who are clear on what they want but whose materials are not communicating that effectively. The work is built on the WOOP-CORE Method — a five-layer positioning intelligence system that starts with your values, builds a language profile from your CVI, excavates your real impact through the WOOP workbook, and translates all of it into materials that answer the three questions every hiring decision comes down to: how do you save me money, how do you make me money, and how do you keep me out of jail.
Who do you typically work with?
I work with mid-to-senior professionals — typically managers, directors, VPs, and senior individual contributors — who have strong track records but are not getting the response rate their experience should generate. My clients are not underqualified. They are under-positioned. Most have 10 to 25 years of experience across industries including healthcare, biotech, technology, defense, entertainment, and consumer brands. I have worked with clients from Medtronic, Johnson and Johnson, Disney, Lockheed Martin, UCLA Health, Amgen, Verizon, and many others.
Do you work with people in all industries?
Yes. The positioning principles that make a resume, LinkedIn profile, and interview narrative work are consistent across industries. What changes is the language, the framing, and the specific outcomes that matter to decision-makers in each field. The CVI positioning profile I build for each client ensures the language in their materials reflects their specific leadership identity and target audience — not a generic template applied across industries.
What does the process look like from start to finish?
Every engagement begins with the free Career Positioning Scorecard. After submitting the scorecard along with your resume and LinkedIn I review everything and run a back-end diagnostic before we connect.
The free Career Positioning Audit is a 20-minute working conversation where I walk you through what I found — specifically the two or three positioning gaps that are holding your materials back — and tell you exactly what to do about them.
If you move forward with a full engagement the next step is the $97 Career Positioning Intake — a 60-minute session where I walk you through the WOOP-CORE framework, your values and leadership brand, and what the full Career Assessment will look like and produce. I review your scorecard, resume, and LinkedIn before the call so the conversation starts with what I already found — not with introductions.
After the intake I build a custom Career Assessment workbook tailored specifically to you. Once you complete it I develop your CVI positioning profile, finalize your positioning strategy, and build your first round of drafts. You receive up to three rounds of substantive revision included in every engagement. Most clients are done by draft two. A fourth draft and beyond is $25 per additional round unless the revision need was caused by feedback I did not address — in which case the additional round is at no charge.
What is the Career Assessment and why does it matter?
The Career Assessment is a structured deep-dive into your professional story — your values, your leadership identity, your CVI profile, and a role-by-role WOOP-CORE impact workbook that excavates the real context behind your results.
I do not send a generic intake form. After the intake call I build your assessment workbook specifically for you based on everything I already know from reviewing your materials. The questions are tailored to your industry, your career level, your target role, and the specific positioning gaps I identified in my diagnostic.
The assessment is the foundation of everything I build. Skipping it or rushing it produces weaker positioning — and I will tell you that directly if I see it happening.
What is the CVI and how do you use it?
The Core Values Index identifies the primary way you process decisions and create value — Builder, Merchant, Innovator, or Banker — and most senior professionals lead with a combination of two.
I do not administer a standardized CVI test. I use your own language — your values answers, your word choices, the way you describe your work throughout the assessment — to identify your CVI positioning profile. A Builder-Banker profile calls for directive language, metric-driven bullets, and executive visibility framing. An Innovator-Merchant profile calls for systems language, collaborative leadership framing, and mission-connected outcomes. The profile determines which words survive to the draft and which ones get cut.
What is the WOOP-CORE Method?
The WOOP-CORE Method is the five-layer positioning intelligence system I use for every engagement. WOOP extracts your real impact — the context, the scale, the obstacles, the before-and-after that never appear in a task-oriented bullet. CORE translates that into positioning language calibrated to your CVI profile and aimed at the three questions every hiring decision comes down to.
The method does not change across engagements. What changes is how it is applied to your specific experience, your specific target audience, and your specific positioning gap. You can learn more on the WOOP-CORE Method page.
How much does it cost to work with you?
The Career Positioning Scorecard is free. The Career Positioning Audit is free.
The Resume Positioning Guide is $27 — a self-guided workbook for professionals who want to do the positioning work themselves.
The DIY Refinement Package is $250 total — resume refinement only. No LinkedIn, no interview narrative, no intake call. The $27 guide credit applies toward the $250 total. Fourteen days of substantive edits on positioning and structure. No guarantee — the output reflects the foundation you provide.
The Career Positioning Intake Session is $97 — a 60-minute live strategy session that applies as a credit toward any full engagement.
The Career Positioning Build starts at $500 and includes your resume, LinkedIn headline and About section, and interview narrative — all built from your custom Career Assessment and CVI positioning profile.
The Career Positioning Intensive starts at $1,000 and is built for directors and above who want the complete package. It includes everything in the Career Positioning Build plus full LinkedIn profile development with a custom banner designed by Joseph around your positioning and personal brand, a LinkedIn growth strategy with posting ideas, article ideas, and messaging templates, an SSI improvement plan, a CV, and a recruiter one-pager designed to be sent directly to recruiters and hiring managers. Limited monthly availability.
Every paid investment applies as a credit toward a full engagement. The $27 guide, the $250 refinement, the $97 intake — all of it moves forward. Nothing you spend is wasted if you decide you need more support later.
Do you offer refunds?
The $97 intake session fee is non-refundable as it covers pre-call preparation and expert time. For full engagements terms are discussed and agreed upon before the work begins. I am committed to the quality of the work and will always work to ensure the output reflects the positioning strategy we develop together.
How long does it take to see results?
Most clients begin seeing a measurable improvement in response rates within two to four weeks of deploying their repositioned materials. The exact timeline depends on the market, the role level, and how actively they are applying. The positioning build itself — from assessment completion to final draft — typically takes one to three weeks depending on the engagement scope.
Do you write the resume for me or do we work on it together?
I do both the strategic positioning work and the actual writing. My job is not to format your existing resume. It is to rebuild how your value is communicated from the ground up — based on your Career Assessment, your CVI profile, and the three-question filter I apply to every line before a draft leaves my hands.
Can I work with you if I am not actively job searching?
Yes. Many clients work with me when they are not in an active search but want their materials ready — either because an opportunity may come up or because they want their LinkedIn profile positioned for inbound visibility. Positioning work is more effective when done before urgency sets in, not during it.
